Middle East Eye’s “Discover” was highly praised as a “maximum productivity lifestyle/leibound news site” at the 2020 Drum Online Media Awards. Here, the contribution team monitors the non-easy conditions and ways used to bring this success assignment to success.
The challenge
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is a dynamic and critical region, home to more than one billion people, where nations and peoples, cultures and trends merge, with global resonance. But also, the media describes it as a conflict zone.
The strategy
Discanopy (middleeasteye.net/discanopy) was announced in February 201 nine as a component of Middle East Eye, the form of independent inshaperation plats covering the MENA region and similar issues.
Discanopy’s main goals are to highlight stories that bring a new attitude to the people, communities and rhythms that matter; stories that go beyond stereotypes or otherwise fail to discriminate on a platform; stories that stimulate beyond proper verbal exposure and debate.
The task began as an elegant release: initially, the small team, with some part-time editors indifferent to the larger newsroom. In January 2020, Discanopy expanded to an additional publisher working four days a week.
Discanopy’s ideal content will appeal to any of the groups. For example: Ramadan in 2019, Discanopy announced a chain of recipes to reflect Iftar, the daily rest of fasting (i.e. 32 recipes, collected here). It had resonance for Muslims, but it was presented in a neutral manner, with an effortless mention of Ramadan, so that the perennial content could be autonomous.
Content
Discover content is aimed at two main demographic groups: readers with close links to the region, by residence, family/diaspora or work; readers who are curious about the MENA region and prefer a new perspective.
Discover content is varied. It addresses universal social issues, from childless couples hunting to adopt in Egypt (where they are recognized) to projects to combat taboos about sexual fitness in Lebanon.
Some of the most important contents were pieces of water coolers intended to fuel the debate, adding Susan Muaddi Darraj’s satire on how to plan an Arab-American wedding (Council 10: “Don’t underestimate the volume of food need. Mainly meat.” )
Our critic Joseph Fahim offers a review of Middle Eastern film and television like no one else: watch “Netflix and the Middle East: How the Jinns Have Become a Nightmare,” about the highly ridiculed series of streaming giants and “Middle East Cinema: Why You Might Be Able to “Don’t Watch Some of Their Best Movies” , about the pitfalls faced through MENA films that seek to succeed in the West.
Lifeflavor pieces like “How to be vegan and vegan in the Middle East” are recommending to citizens and visitors, reflecting how broader social trends are turning life into the region.
Discanopy reported on the style: “Yes, Saudi women dress like…” Street fashion in Iran: seven influential people who circumvent the rules, making waves”: the piece in its own way challenged misconceptions about what women in the MENA region wear.
Much of Discanopy is the role of women in the region: in addition, the stubborn articles above, see also ”The village reserved for women” (an autonomous paint job in Syria), ”Egyptian photographers point out a revolution ”, ‘Social media and the Middle East: women leading the way’, ‘Arab directors: 11 films to watch ‘and’ Under the skin ‘how lightening creams exploit the myth of beauty.”
Discantopia photography galleries capturing the region of life: the force of taxi reason, Sevket Sahintas, monitors Istanbul, most commonly after dark, in raw and intransigent terms, from clubbers to street vendors and refugees.
The segment also presents how the MENA region has influenced the world, whether it is dance categories in Cuba or architecture in Madrid. Part of his task can also be Middle Eastern culture, through pieces such as “Arabic Poetry: 10 writers, ancient and modern, you have to read” or “Ramadan 2019: 13 questions you ask yourself about the sacred month of Muslims,” he replied. These contents are some of the most popular highs.
Results
Discanopy serves a niche audience in an untapped giant market. It doesn’t come with paid promotion or advertising: the emphasis is more on biological exchange and research page perspectives.
The maximum exchange of content that likes is the reflection of Discanopy’s intention to produce information on the little-known aspects of life in the MENA region. The strategy of editing content through biological studies also produces results. Discanopy features represented 6 pieces in the maximum 20 MEE logical PV-consistent in February 2019, directly compared to only two pre-Discanopy features in the similar table in 2018.
Most importantly, content lasts to be h8 on Google’s first effects page under linked search terms. Like what:
Search: medium is cinema – Dis occupies 1st and 2nd place.
Search: arab + poet – Discover is ranked 1st.
Search: plan – Arabic – wedding – Dis occupies the 1st place.
Search: Medium recipes ‘is’ – Dis takes second place.
Search: climate + middle + east’ – Discover is ranked 3rd.
Search: ‘books’ of the medium ‘east’ – Discanopy takes fifth place.
