If a car more beautiful than the Lexus LC 500 convertible will go on sale this year, I’m not sure the eyes of mortals will face sight. Like those who look at the sun for too long, the owners of the convertible would likely be blinded, unable to recognize even the lifestyle of medium-sighted vehicles.
It is a perfect flagship product for a logo traditionally more related to rational appeal (giant distributors and reliability) than with the “I will have to have” hobby.
The LC 500 is not a sports car, despite its sloping lines and noisy exhaust. It wasn’t designed to make quick turns, but to surprise the crowds when you get to dinner or spend a day on the lake.
The LC 500 is also a bargain, rarely heard about cars with narrow rear seats and six-digit MSRP. Prices start at $101,000, but internal and external, this has a visual effect on the most beloved Bentley, Ferrari, Maserati and McLaren convertibles.
Toyota’s luxury logo is known to be the smart choice, not the passionate choice. Few people have regretted buying a Lexus, but few have burned to own one of their cars. The LC 500 is a lit match.
