President Donald Trump plans to ban U.S. social media enforcement TikTok as soon as Saturday. He said he planned to use a decree to make the move.
“As far as TikTok is concerned, we are banning them in the United States,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One Friday night. “I have this authority Array … It will be signed tomorrow.”
The resolution would force ByteDance, China’s parent company, to divest and sell its U.S. operations. From now on, Microsoft has been the main competitor in the acquisition of the social media platform.
News comes after talks between the Trump administration and ByteDance were interrupted. Although the Chinese company planned to sell its operations in the United States, it sought to maintain a minority stake in the company.
TikTok raised one to national security because of his privacy concerns. In fact, the company has been slapped with legal action on this same subject. Earlier this year, 4 Illinois teenagers filed a lawsuit for the company’s use of biometric data.
“TikTok uses facial popularity software to overlay filters on users’ faces and synthetic intelligence to evaluate the quality of downloaded videos and the user’s age, according to the essay. Through these processes, TikTok would have acquired the user’s facial geometry,” the Chicago Tribune reported in May.
In February 2019, TikTok, formerly Musical.ly, settled a $5.7 million lawsuit for collecting non-public knowledge about the app’s youth, a flagrant violation of the Online Privacy Act (COPPA), WHSV-TV reported in the past. COPPA asks for parental consent before gathering knowledge about young people.
Despite its developing controversy, TikTok said it committed to respecting the privacy of its users.
“We’ve rented nearly 1,000 more people to our U.S. team this year alone, and we’re proud to rent 10,000 workers in well-paying jobs in the United States,” a spokesman from TikTok told CNBC in a statement. “Our $1 billion art fund supports American creators who build livelihoods from our platform.
“The knowledge of the American user of TikTok is stored in the United States, with strict controls on the access of painters,” he said. “TikTok’s biggest investors come from the United States. We are committed to protecting the privacy and protection of our users as we continue to paint to brighten up the meaningful families and careers for those who believe in our platform.”
