The Canuck Way Mailbag: Playoffs, Pettersson’s fashion, more

Does Jake Virtanens’ offensive game outweigh his defense by keeping him out of the lineup?

– Ty Pardy (tpardy21) 1 August 2020

Jake Virtanen’s offensive game has taken a step forward this year and was on his way to a 20-goal, 40-point season if the season continued the normal way. However, eye exam and research will tell you that Virtanen still wants paintings about his defensive play. He seems defensively lost and makes very expensive mistakes, as well as wasting battles in forums and corners in the defensive zone.

To answer your question, I don’t think your offensive game will overcome your defensive challenges. I think his defensive challenges are one of the reasons Travis Green was so he and kept him out of lineup against the Winnipeg Jets. Being a tough striker is about having a defensive game forged and combining it with physicality and offensive ability. The defense has been a challenge for Virtanen for years and will solve it as soon as possible.

What is a successful playoff series for the Canucks this year?

– Pp1 PODCAST (ThePP1Podcast) August 1, 2020

Personally, I think beating Minnesota Wild will mean a successful playoff run. If the Canucks outperform the Wilds, it will give the boys like Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes a playoff delight and prove that this young core is in a position to compete on the big stage.

The purpose at the start of the season was to reach the playoffs and win just one circular. I know that the rating circular is not technically the playoffs, but achieving the last 16 would be acceptable in my opinion. In addition, the Canucks haven’t won a genuine playoff series (I know, this is the only five games at most, but it’s still a series). Since 2011, it would be great to replace this statistic in almost 10 years.

What are the chances: #Canucks move to the playoffs or lose the play-in series and have a chance in the first overall selection?

– Rick SVEIKS ???? (@RockinWestVan) August 1, 2020

Honestly, I think the Canucks have a better shot at the first overall pick than going on a deep playoff run. No, this does not mean I am on Team Tank. I would like the Canucks to beat the Wild but I am not sure if they can get passed a team like the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars or the Vegas Golden Knights. I would be very happy to be wrong but I don’t see it happening.

12.5% isn’t a lot but if the Canucks lose to the Wild, it would be their highest draft lottery odds in the last five years. The 12.5% chance has me dreaming of Alexis Lafreniere as a Canuck, but we all know that the Canucks have terrible luck at the draft lottery.  I would be happy if the Canucks beat the Wild or lose and have a chance at number one overall either way. Both outcomes are fine.

What do you think Elias Pettersson’s biggest struggle will be in the 2020 NHL Play-in Qualifier?

– Adam Dane (AdamDane7) 1 August 2020

I’m expecting wonderful things from Pettersson for the qualifying round, but if he’s suffering one way or another, it would be his end. In its two NHL seasons to date, Pettersson has been prone to lack of quality opportunities and experience an era of drought.

The savages have a smart defense. Back-back boys like Jared Spurgeon, Matt Dumba and Jonas Brodin can silence their opponent’s most sensible goalscorers and did a very clever task to keep Pettersson off the playing sheet the last time those groups met in February.

Basically, Pettersson wants to find a way to bury his possibilities and get out of the Wild’s defense. If you don’t, you may be in scoring crises at the worst time of your career.
