Can Biden repair America’s ties to Europe?

The middle of the 17th century was an ordinary era, especially for political and institutional innovation. The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 gave us the nation-state, books such as the “Leviathan” of Hobbes were produced and in England the first expressions of popular constitutional democracy were disseminated. The tumult of the time was mitigated through the return of King Charles II to England, in what has been called “The Restoration,” which comes to mind when I think of Joe Biden’s presidential hopes.

The Biden Restoration

To begin with, I will not revise the map of the United States in 2020 with the overdue Europe of the seventeenth century, to say that any of the periods are marked by the feeling of a “world upside down”.

However, from a European perspective, the perception of an American recovery is that a Joe Biden presidency would repair the thread of democratic politics (from Obama to Bill Clinton) and, above all, repair the competent functioning and staffing of the institutions. like the State Department

The concept is that the U.S. state device would return to action and that American credibility would be restored. For Biden, Democrats and the United States is whether he can achieve more than a “restoration.”

Polls show victory

With Biden now way ahead of the president in top national and state-by-state opinion polls, and Donald Trump firing his crusade manager last week, the prospect of a Biden presidency is now very real, money markets still don’t seem to be comparing in that regard.

The good fortune of Biden’s crusade and the tenor of his future presidency will count in a giant component of the magnitude of economic damage to come. If high unemployment and bankruptcies are a truth in the September and October presidential debates, the tone of politics will be much more focused on social justice (an issue where Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are very comfortable).

Aggressive policy

A White House Biden would likely concentrate much of its stimulus efforts on infrastructure, especially the “green” economy. What is much less transparent is the extent to which they would reorganize the tax formula to impose a heavier tax burden on Americans and richer companies. This could well be revealed in the coming months.

We can also expect foreign policy under Biden to be much stronger, especially towards Russia and China. As far as Europe is concerned, Biden as an Irish-American will prospectively focus on Ireland as a gateway to the EU, his foreign policy team also has close ties to other European countries such as France. As many European governments distrust the United States as a diplomatic partner, there are large amounts of goodwill and credibility that want to be rebuilt through a possible Biden government.

Democrats take the Senate?

Europeans watching the electoral crusade are also focusing on the Senate. For their part, the dilemma for Democrats is what tone to give all states to take over the Senate. A mild technique for “disconnecting” America is very likely, to the detriment of Bernie Sanders’ murmur. Once in office, Democrats will be more attractive as they will feel more comfortable following Elizabeth Warren’s strategy, and more emboldened to regulation in spaces such as corporate governance and environmental protection. For the most part, they can simply look to Europe for inspiration in these political spaces.

A situation that (according to today’s polls) puts trump down politically, paralyzes the Republican Party and reparates Democrats, possibly repairing stability in the United States, yet some Europeans fear it won’t replace him, let alone postpone some of the radical policies. that is necessary to revitalize the United States and make it a closest spouse to Europe in the 21st century.

What will the original replacement look look like?

Open social tensions, political stasis and extremes of wealth/inequality, as well as the decline of human progression indicators, imply the need for more than just restoration.
