On Friday, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway for President Trump to resume regular coronavirus briefings to approve his pandemic management in public polls.
Asked on Fox News why most Americans oppose Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis, Conway replied, “The president’s numbers were much higher when he was out there briefing everybody on a day-by-day basis about the coronavirus, just giving people the information.”

In a literal sense, the White House adviser has its roots in a quantitative truth: Trump’s approval score was about five issues higher in April than it is now. For Conway, there’s an explanation for this: when Trump took the podium in the meeting room every day, apparently to provide updates on the pandemic, he strengthened his numbers. At the end of the briefings, his help slipped.
This is actually a form of recent developments.
But I would propose a better way. In case someone forgets, the president’s daily coronavirus briefings were an absolute disaster. It has been noted that Trump is constantly lying, suffers fundamental problems, contradicts members of his own team and, at one point, suggests that disinfectant injections may be just an effective treatment.
In early April, even many Republicans begged the White House to end those extravagant daily events. Trump eventually became convinced that he was doing much more harm than smart in his own position, so he reduced the briefings.
Hearing Conway say he explains the president’s slippery support. I will assume the dangers and say that the explanation for Trump’s lousy public reputation is that it does not respond dramatically to a serious crisis of public fitness.
