Claire Jefferson, 52, who lives next door to the site, said, “My husband was abandoned at 5 a.m. because he saw the blue lights.
“An outdoor police car and chimney trucks began arriving in the early hours of the morning. There were flames coming out of the roof and a column of smoke.
“You don’t know what’s in it, it may have just been a fuel bottle or whatever.
“There were at least 8 engines in and out of the morning.”
In addition to being visual in Newton Aycliffe and the A1, citizens reported seeing Ferryhill and Sedgefield smoke.
A Facebook resident:
“It’s so bad at Woodham in Aycliffe, the smell is smoky like fog.”
There are reports of dense smoke in it and local citizens have been asked to close their windows.
One resident reported smoke on the A1 between junctions 60 and 59.
A spokesman for Durham County Council said: “We are running with colleagues @CDDFRS in a chimney at the former site of Eldon Brickworks.
“There is no threat to the public, however, domain citizens are asked to keep windows and doors closed and immediate dominance.”
The teams witness a giant fireplace in the former Eldon brick factory near Bishop Auckland.
A spokesman for the Durham county fire and rescue department and Darlington said:
“Lately we’re facing a primary incident at Bishop Auckland’s Eldon.
“There are 7 planes, an air ladder platform, a bulk water tanker truck and several senior officials present.
“Members of the public in the vicinity are asked to keep their doors and windows closed due to the large amount of smoke and the dangerous fabrics imaginable involved.”
