Sheryl Crow talks about his next musical words for Audible

Sheryl Crow is the newest artist to share the stories and songs of her life for the Audible music series, which Forbes learned exclusively.their hits when the track premieres on September 9.

“We went to the beginning. How I went from developing in a city with 3 red lamps to a position on the Michael Jackson tour. Having been a school teacher and moved to Los Angeles,” Crow said in a call from his outdoor home Nashville. “Having experienced cancer and all kinds of things, and passing out on the other side and feeling incredibly compelled to write and tell stories through music.

Although he says his adventure so far is encouraging at the end, Crow also doesn’t forget some of his darker chapters and adds his joy for Jackson’s excursion.”My joy at sexual harassment on this tour is similar to what is happening.today with the Me Too movement, ” he says.” There are some difficult moments there, but also some amazing moments.”

Documenting resonant moments and their connection to artists’ songs is precisely the sentiment of Words + Music, the suite of musical narratives from Audible that recently received an infusion via a multi-project partnership with production company Gunpowder & Sky. 

The companies’ collaboration already has yielded installments from Alanis Morissette, Smokey Robinson and St. Vincent. And Gunpowder & Sky chief Van Toffler says the series is ramping up quickly as word spreads about the project, and artists look for meaningful ways to connect during the lockdown on live events.

“We’d talked about the series well before the pandemic,” he says. “Then suddenly all of these artists had all this free time. Particularly at this time, for artists to tell stories about their music and songs and record while they’re home, it was like they said, ‘I’ll pay you to do this.’ It’s given people a bit of space and breath to try a new format and create in a new genre for them.”

“We’ve seen a ton of enthusiasm from our customers for our pre-existing titles,” says Rachel Ghiazza, Audible head of US content, noting the success of earlier Audibles from Common, Tom Morello, Patti Smith, James Taylor and Rufus Wainwright. 

“The opportunity to expand was a no-brainer for us,” she adds. “With everything going on in the world, it’s really opened up a different avenue for storytellers to tell their stories, and musicians are natural storytellers. This is a format that allows them to do that in a new way.”

Toffler, who in a beyond life directed MTV, Words Music to the iconic series of the network “Unplugged” and “Storytellers”, which aired on the sister channel VH1.It’s an analogy that resonates with Crow, who this summer digs off the road for the first time in 25 years.

“It’s like storytellers without the visual, but it has something charming because the visual develops in the eye of the person’s mind, the stories,” he says.”In fact, I miss gambling for people.But the positive thing for me is that this [project] actually brought me back to the game and to the singing, one by one.

Crow says the storytelling was “very important” in the development of his home.”My parents have amazing stories. Now we’re trained to make sure we do anything in a six-second piece or a piece of music or not to lose the listener.”He opposes that, and I enjoyed it.
