Work is under way on a bridge awning in the historic market

Work has begun to install a new bridge at Preston Markets.

The assignment is carried out through the architect, director of the design and drawing company, Frank Whittle Partnership (FWP), in collaboration with designer and specialist manufacturer DP Structures.

The facility is the ultimate step in the upgrade of the award-winning market, which opened in early 2018.The lobthrough designed through FWP in collaboration with Greig and Stephenson Architects.

The new awning will be placed on the internal entry doors between market stalls and improve the environment during the year, ensuring greater convenience for consumers and traders.

The design made of metal frames and filled with transparent panels to preserve the visual appearance of the bottom of the canopy of the original 1875 market, which was thoroughly renovated through an FWP-led team.

The new canopy has been manufactured elsewhere and installation will take about 10 weeks.

The paints will be placed outside business hours, which will cause minimal disruption for investors and customers.

Brent Clayton, an FWP spouse who lives in Preston and who led the regeneration of five million pounds of the city’s markets, said: “The goal of the entry canopy is to make shopping at the market a comfortable and fun experience.

“We work intensively with market investors and Preston City Council on this cutting-edge project.

“The canopy designed to retain heat in the market aisle.

“This will also allow you to see the underside of the magnificent Victorian glass ceiling that has been restored in all its glory and which is one of the architectural and design treasures of the city.”

The awning created through DP Structures, Nelson-based designers and brands that specialize in creating traditional metal architectural structures and products.

Sam Livesey, president of the Preston Markets Merchant Association, said: “This installation program is welcomed by all Preston Markets merchants.

“The plan for the awning to be in position before the colder months and that there will be minimal disruption to our business and our customers.”

The Market Regeneration Project has won the Royal Town Planning Institute’s top prestigious regional award for creating economically rich and dirty venues.

Historic England and a conservation organization have also been concerned about the progression of a design and use of fabrics fully compatible with the indexed canopy.

Preston City Council’s vision for assignment included the creation of a central destination that attracted a wide diversity of visitors and residents, a food-based technique, and the redesign of visually oriented markets.

FWP, which also has offices in Manchester and London, has worked on several primary regeneration projects in his hometown, remodeling the Deepdale lot in Preston North End.

He is also part of the team looking to make the construction of the Park Hotel a milestone for rail travelers arriving in Preston, for their luxury use.
