Congress has not yet approved the application, and a budget edition approved by the House would repair the investment in Bars and Stars.A bipartisan organization of 11 Democratic senators and 4 Republican senators wrote to Defense Secretary Mark Esper this week opposing the “proposed investment elimination.”for Stars and Stripes, pointing to the “very negative effect on army families” that such closure would have.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a best friend of Trump’s, also opposed the closure, and wrote a letter to Esper last August, describing Stars and Stripes as “a popular ‘local newspaper’ for the armed forces and their families.and civilian workers around the world.” Graham wrote: “As a veteran who has served abroad, I know the price that bars and stars offer their readers.”

Stars and Stripes, an army publication independent of Pentagon editorial control, was first published in 1861 and has been published since World War II with an existing readership of 1.3 million readers.

In a tweet that followed a USA Today report, Stars and Stripes reporter Steve Beynon is confident that readers will continue his paintings.”I read Stars and Stripes on a mountain in Afghanistan when I was a 19-year-old looming journalist,” Beynon wrote in a tweet he later retwented through the official Stars and Stripes Twitter account.”Now I paint there. It doesn’t stop journalism. Today I’m juggling 3 long-term reports.”
