WASHINGTON – The Bank of America showed Monday that it will enroll in five other primary banks that have pledged not to fund drilling at the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The announcement comes just weeks after Trump’s management announced that it was initiating the shelter rental procedure. President-elect Joe Biden has vowed to protect the shelter. Environment America’s Public Lands Campaign Director Ellen issued the following statement: “We welcome Bank of America’s commitment not to fund drilling at the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The coastal plain of this iconic domain is an irreplaceable gem. It is home to endangered polar bears and the calving floor for the porcupine caribou herd. Given the refuge’s unique role in the herb world, it would be a foolish mistake to finance the destruction of this valuable habitat. “With renewable power sources like the wind and the sun offering Americans more power, it makes less sense than ever to drill in the Arctic. And with the new administration poised to take action on climate change, drilling and burning more oil is rarely a very smart plan. We are pleased that Bank of America recognizes the importance of protecting the Arctic. We urge oil corporations to follow the lead of the banks and remain transparent of this vital open domain as we move toward our ultimate purpose: to permanently protect the safe haven. “
