LAUSANA, Switzerland (AP) – The organizers of the parkour game suggested Tuesday that the IIC reject the addition of the disabled street race occasion at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris due to a dispute with the governing body of gymnastics.
Parkour Earth has been opposed for years to what it calls a “hostile takeover” of the game through the International Gymnastics Federation, known as FIG.
“Unfortunately, the usurpation and misappropriation of our game through FIG continues,” Parkour Earth wrote in a letter open to the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday.
The IIC Executive Board will meet on Monday and the sporting programme of the Paris Games is scheduled to end. Applications to upload new or existing medals are expected through the governing bodies.
Fig, which will have 18 medals at the Tokyo Olympics next year, is expected to support the parkour inclusion request, as it evolved in Paris in the 1990s.
Parkour’s impressive urban tricks have apparent appeal at a time when the Olympics are aimed at a younger audience.
Skateboarding, 3-on-3 basketball and climbing will make their debut in Tokyo, the IIC has rejected fig’s parkour proposal. Breakdance will be an Olympic game in Paris in 2024.
What opposes parkour for the Paris Games is the IAO’s policy of adding medal occasions that only fear the existing group of athletes. The IAO needs to increase the overall quota of 10,500 athletes competing in 2024, and the parkour competition is separated from the FIG Olympic disciplines of artistic and rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline.
Despite the dispute with Parkour Earth, fig plans to hold its first world parkour championship in March. Speed and freestyle parkour events are planned in Hiroshima, Japan.
“Collaboration is an herbal option,” Lausanne’s gymnastics body said, “because several national FIG-affiliated gymnastics federations already offer parkour activities.
