MTV Entertainment commits $250 million to diversify TV shows

LOS ANGELES (AP) – MTV Entertainment Group says it is committing $250 million to bring the production of real TV screens to life over the next 3 years through corporations owned and run by women and other people of color.

VIAcomCBS MTV Entertainment, which includes MTV and VH1, will provide funds, staff and others to foster new concepts that will “feed the needs of uns scripted content” today and tomorrow, according to a Thursday announcement.

Advocates for expanding diversity in the entertainment industry say progress demands more women and other people of color in decision-making positions.

The initiative builds on MTV Entertainment’s unscripted record, adding the first ever show of “The Real World” truth, creating asset opportunities “for its partners,” the company said.

Lashan Browning and Adam Gonzalez, the truth TV manufacturers who were asked last year to lead the initiative, will create their own production with a capital investment from MTV Entertainment, according to the announcement.
