Sunday Brunch: Ozzie Quevedo Named Alabama Interim Swimming Coach

Former Olympian Ozzie Quevedo took over as head swimming and diving coach at the University of Alabama.

Coley Stickels resigned as Crimson Tide’s head coach last week. He was hired as Alabama’s head coach in April 2019.

In the same December 28 press release announcing Stickels’ resignation, the school announced that Stickels would be replaced by 2015 global champion Margo Geer, a 27-time All-American in Arizona who served as a volunteer coach in Alabama. Geer is lately studying for the 2021 Olympics and will return to the program after the end of her competitive career. Quevedo will run the program until then.

Quevedo, a member of the 1999 Auburn NCAA Championship team and a 2000 Olympian, competing for Venezuela. He was Alabama’s associate head coach before being promoted to interim head coach.

Alabama pitcher Connor Prielipp and wide receiver Sam Praytor have been revered throughout Collegiate Baseball News as preseason All-Americans.

Prielipp named in the first team and Praytor in the third team.

Prielipp finished his first season in Alabama last year as a Collegiate Baseball News first team and All-American freshman and had a 0. 00 ERA in 21 innings pitched. He left-hander 3-0 when the season was interrupted by COVID-19.

Praytor, a momentary red top last season, had six home runs with 18 RBIs and 14 runs scored last season.

Men’s and women’s basketball at Stillman College are scheduled to open their seasons on Tuesday, unless COVID-19 is postponed.

Both groups will be touring and performing at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. They will return home to host William Carey College on January 9th at Birthright Alumni Hall. Fans will be able to attend Stillman’s house games this season.

Derek Maas and Morgan Scott of Alabama were named the SEC’s male and female swimmers of the week, and Matt King was named the league’s men’s rookie of the week.

Maas won the one hundred and two hundred breaststroke in the Alabama men’s victory over Kentucky. Scott played a decisive role in 4 relay victories, winning all one hundred and two hundred times of women’s freestyle. King won all 50 and 100 freestyle occasions and was a member of 4 winning relay teams.

After a vacation, Alabama returns to the house festival opposite Auburn on January 15. Spectators are allowed due to COVID-19 security restrictions.

The Gulf South Conference has postponed 4 Western Alabama University men’s basketball games and at least two women’s games scheduled for next week.

The Jan. 2-3 games for men at Delta State have been postponed, as have the Jan. 8 games and the nine home games opposed to Mississippi College. Update dates have been announced. That leaves the UWA men’s season opener until January 15 at Union.

The women’s team played two games, either winning to give them a 2-0 record. His wins came at home in mid-December against Delta State. The games at Christian Brothers, scheduled for Jan. 2-3, have been postponed. This is the time of the motion in this series, which was originally scheduled to take position on December 18-19. A third update date has not been announced.

The GSC, due to COVID-19 safety precautions, has a conference-only betting program this season with back-to-back betting games at the same venue.

With a split fall-spring schedule this season due to COVID-19 measures put in place through the SEC, Alabama will resume its volleyball season on January 29 and 30 with home games opposite South Carolina. Alabama will play Ole Miss on February 5 and 6; in Arkansas on February 12 and 13; at home opposite Auburn on February 17-18; at home opposite the State of Mississippi on February 26 and 27; at Texas A&M on March 5-6; and Kentucky on March 24 and 25.

All postponements will be scheduled from March 29 to April 3.

Brad Montgomery, who was a member of the athletic education staff at the University of West Alabama for 31 years and is a member of the Alabama Athletic Coaches Association and the UWA Hall of Fame, announced his retirement as director of athletic education for the Tigers.

He replaced through Hudson Byrnes, UWA sports coach since 2019.

Joining the sports team and running with soccer is Olivia Sabo.
