Cinemas are exempt from paying kerala entertainment tax until March this year, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Monday in a tweet.
“Cinemas have been exempt from the January-March entertainment tax (2021). Fixed electricity prices reduced by 50% from 10 months of cinema closure. They extended the validity of various licenses. Our arts industries will play a very important role in recovery,” he wrote on the microblogging site.
The announcement comes days after state theaters re-opened Tuesday with strict Covid-19 restrictions. However, not all theaters resumed operations while awaiting the government’s reaction to their demands for a GST relief on tickets and an exemption from exhibition tax to allow recovery. They had also called for an exemption from the constant monthly electricity tariff of less than 50,000 rupees, allowing theaters to compensate for losses they have suffered in the following nine months.
While other programs have been accepted, as indicated in the Chief Minister’s tweet, it is still known whether the GST in tickets has been reduced or will be implemented in the coming days.
Currently, only theaters have been allowed to operate at an occupancy of 50%, which has created controversy among movie theater owners who have asked the government to increase capacity to 80%. Viewers also wear masks at all times and follow appropriate social criteria. Distancing.
In accordance with popular operating procedures (SOOs) published through the government, theatres should be cleaned and disinfected at normal periods and detection times should also be staggered.
