Construction is expected to be completed in the spring of 2022.

Blackpool Council announced that it has secured contracts, adding a 25-year lease for a nine-screen movie theater complex with the largest IMAX screen in the Northwest.

Tower Street Car Park will also house a new Wilko store, following the demolition of the former Talbot Road store, which closed in March last year.

Wilko will take a 15-year lease with the board for a new 22,500-square-foot unit for this purpose.

Both agreements have been in process for some time, but were introduced with a five million pound government grant approved in October.

The board, which acquired the Houndshill center in November 2019 for 47. 6 million pounds, also sealed the acquisition of tower street car park from developer Coolsilk to allow the structure to start.

Senior Counselor Lynn Williams said: “We have made it clear that our acquisition of Houndshill is the first step in revitalizing downtown Blackpool by introducing high-quality recreational attractions to complement the existing advertising offering.

“For the city center to thrive, we want to offer new reasons to attract citizens and visitors.

“Signing those three contracts paves the way for us to take a step in this direction.

“We are very pleased that all parties are now on board and we can move for early commissioning on site, creating new jobs and opportunities. “

The expansion of Phase Two will also come with two restaurants totaling 3,760 square feet, with negotiations for safe operators who would be at an “advanced” stage.

The cinema will have 850 seats on nine virtual screens, adding a giant center screen in one position for IMAX PLF (Premium Large Screen Format), which will be the largest in the Northwest, in a 40,500 square foot unit.

The screens can be used as convention spaces and there will be an e-sports café.

John Sullivan, founder of MMC Cinemas, said: “Blackpool has a heritage as a recreational destination and this multimedia center is ready to cement that reputation.

“Its flexible design adapts to the city’s desires and Lancashire’s wider desires, providing only a destination to note the latest film premieres, but also flexible to enable conferences, an area to inspire the progression of local businesses and much more.

“We are excited about Blackpool’s ability to take advantage of the trend in e-sports development with a committed gaming space. “

The entire program was facilitated through a five million-pound investment from the government’s Covid 19 Getting Building Fund, following official approval by the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) in October last year.

Blackpool Council will finance the balance of the prudential loan plan.
