Amazon buys some of the energy generated through a huge offshore wind farm in the Netherlands

LONDON – Amazon announced Monday that it plans to buy some of the energy generated through a new massive wind farm in the Netherlands.

Shell and Eneco were authorized to build the 759-megawatt wind farm in the North Sea last July, and Amazon announced that it would now buy more than 380 MW of its production to force its operations in Europe.

Amazon said Amazon-Shell HKN’s “marine wind energy allocation” will be your one-place renewable energy allocation to date. The offshore wind farm is expected to be operational until 2023.

Located 18. 5 kilometers off the Dutch coast and covering a 125-kilometre domain, the wind farm will be operated through the CrossWind consortium, which is a joint venture between Shell and Eneco.

It would come with 69 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with a capacity of 11 MW and a rotor diameter of two hundred meters.

The offshore wind farm will come with five technological prototypes that can be deployed on a giant scale in the future, adding a floating solar farm and ‘optimized turbines’.

Nat Sahlstrom, Amazon Energy’s director at Amazon Web Services, told CNBC that the company is its “size and scale” to verify and make a difference.

“We are working with energy corporations around the world to put new renewable solar and wind projects into effect,” Sahlstrom said via email. “We are also focusing on innovation and power and how we can use emerging technologies to help improve our climate goals. “

Like other tech giants, Amazon will use its billions to pay for more renewable energy resources and reduce its carbon footprint.

The company’s knowledge centers around the global use of large amounts of electricity to carry out IT responsibilities for Amazon and other companies.

Over the years, Greenpeace has accused Amazon of being discreet about the force resources it uses to force centers, which run through Amazon Web Services. AWS has denied the allegations.

Amazon has also been criticized for expanding the contaminants of its aircraft and vans and for excessive amounts of cardboard when packaging its products. Amazon says its packaging is one hundred percent renewable and does not use plastic housings or cables.

Amazon said the Dutch allocation would bring it closer to its net carbon target 0 through 2040 and allow it to use 100 percent renewable energy until 2025, five years earlier than planned.

The company said it now has 187 solar and wind projects worldwide, including 125 solar installations on the roofs of its huge warehouses, which it calls distribution centers.

Europe’s largest rooftop solar facility is located in the UK and equates to 28 football pitches, meaning it can produce enough energy for 700 homes for a year, Amazon said.

The company added that its renewable energy projects now generate more than 6. 9 gigawatts and supply more than 20 million megawatt hours of year-consistent energy.

Amazon claims to be the global renewable energy customer.
