Phil Mickelson told ESPN’s Bob Harig on Thursday that he wasn’t sure he would settle for a special exemption to play at this year’s US Open.
“I don’t know, I just don’t know the answer to that right now,” Mickelson said after his first circular at the Valspar Championship. “My intention is to be in qualifying the day after the [Memorial Tournament in Ohio]. . “
Golfers can earn a US Open box position through qualifying tournaments or 17 other exemptions. Mickelson will earn a place in the final on June 7.
Lately, the 50-year-old cannot benefit from any of the exemptions unless the U. S. Golf Association grants him a special exemption, which has yet been determined.
Mickelson could be hypothetically in the 60th most sensible of official golf qualifications worldwide until May 24 or June 7 and win an offer that way, however, lately he ranks 113rd.
This year’s U. S. Open will be held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California, June 17-20.
The San Diego venue has played in the tournament every year since 1990 in 1993 and 2017. The five-time primary winner never won the event, however, he has six finalists and 10 results in the top 10.
