Connecticut has not officially approved sports betting, but that hasn’t stopped interested parties from telling Connecticut lottery officials that they are ready, willing, and will move to Nutmeg state once that’s the case.
Connecticut Lottery officials announced that they had won 15 qualifying programs, or RFQs, to offer retail and online sports betting operations, assuming the state General Assembly passed the law by the end of this year.
“We are pleased to see the significant interest of corporations wishing to partner with the CLC to bring to market our online sports betting offering and retailers,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, president of Connecticut Lottery Corporation, in delivering tenders.
“Our staff and the board of directors will now begin a procedure to count bidders’ qualifications as we seek the right spouse in this initiative vital to our state. “
Governor Ned Lamont (D) announced earlier this year an agreement with members of the Mohegan tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot tribe that would pave the way for opportunities to expand gaming opportunities in the state, adding sports betting.
A Senate committee approved the bill in March, but it was not sent to the Senate for consideration. The Connecticut General Assembly ends on June 9.
Since the law deals with tribal issues, the agreement will also have to be approved through the Ministry of the Interior. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland is a member of the Pueblo tribe in Laguna, New Mexico, the first Native American to hold a cabinet position.
These obstacles aside, the lottery continues to advance its efforts to approve an application until May 17. The formula would be on track to be launched on 6 September, assuming that it is approved by legislators and the DOI. Connecticut bettors in time for the football season.
Under the terms of the agreement, the lottery will have the right to open 15 retail sports sites, in addition to Bridgeport and Hartford.
