Europatat is a component of a foreign consortium involved in the assignment of ADAPT (Accelerated Development of TolerAnt PoTato Multi-Stress) studies. This task aims to expand new methods to adapt potatoes to the difficult expansion situations of the future.
It will be in July 2020 and will take a position over the next 3 years, with a global budget of 5 million euros, funded through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 study and innovation programme.
The wishes of potato producers are of basic interest to the researchers, business partners and breeders involved in the project. In an online survey, ADAPT asked about farmers’ perceptions of climate change, their reports related to its effect on potato production and their need for suitable potato varieties.
In total, ADAPT’s spouse for the survey, the Austrian Food Safety and Health Agency (AGES), obtained 553 responses, of which the maximum came from farmers with potato production plants in Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Slovenia and Belgium, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom.
Surprisingly, nearly 90% of respondents indicated that climate replacement had affected their potato production for more than 10 years. In addition, nearly 50% have known climate replacement as a risk to maintaining potato production on their farms!
