Valarie Joiner has had the feeling for about 3 years of opening a women’s store, which she felt reached a boiling point in May.
At the time, she and her Terrance Baker were renting a room at a grocery mall at 1102 South Adams Street to open the store. They will have the Flames opener on Saturday at noon.
The time can’t come fast enough for Joiner, who eagerly stepped up the finishing touches to the space’s adornment last week. It doesn’t matter if they’re about to own businesses for the first time in the midst of a pandemic, he said, radiating with optimism. .
“I feel like when I have something in my stomach, I’m going to do it,” Joiner said. “I don’t care what society says; it’s going to happen. I’m just going to accept it.
At the grand opening, Joiner and Baker will have a new year and the Urban League will collaborate on the event, said Curtis Taylor, president and chief executive officer of the organization.
Having a partnership is important, as many young people have urgent desires for the school to open next month, Taylor said.
“We need to take a look at everything we can do to make academics better in their lives; to make their circle of family members bigger and have a better learning environment,” he said. “We need to paint with this young woman and when she has her inauguration, we have to be there for her 100%. “

The grand opening will culminate with a concept that Joiner and Baker began with the promotion of garments online, delivering each and every one of the paid orders. The case has blossomed.
Then they knew that the time had come to move to the physical stores because of the difficulty of driving to their customers.
“I was tired of delivering clothes,” Joiner said. “I felt like I would have a position where other people could just walk in and browse – take a look at the total collection without me having to show them piece by piece.
The position is picturesque, with brick panels. In addition to mannequins, garments are hung along walls on hooks that look like exposed pipes.
Most of the designs are the creation of Baker, who admits that his most productive paintings are the scenes.
The couple have been friends since the days they attended Godby High School. They graduated in 2011. Each of them has a daily task: she with the postal service and him as a truck driving force for Sysco, a food delivery company at places to eat.
Their hours of operation will restrict them from operating the store starting at 5:30 p. m. at nine o’clock at night from Monday to Friday and from 10. 00 to 20. 00 on weekends.
The preparation hours since May have been long and arduous, Joiner said they were driven through obstacles by what they were doing.
“It’s a process, but I feel like as long as I have the power to do it, we have to do it,” he said. “We’ve invested a lot of cash in it, so we need to see the benefits. “At this point we are exhausted, so we must hurry up and start thriving. “
