Already exploring a number of varied projects in his career, namely the monstrous creation and expansion of Third Man Records, Jack White ventured into a more familiar territory: art and design.

White’s beyond in upholstery dates back to 1996 when he opened Third Man Upholstery in Detroit after being apprenticed to upholsterer Brian Muldoon. In his shop, White used the area to write songs and paintings on sculptures before finishing it in 1998 and leaving the words “Jack White there and component of it will never leave ” engraved on a beam on the inner ceiling.
His paintings on furniture and upholstery over the years span a myriad of personal projects, adding the renovation of an original Sam Phillips recording studio sofa, a restored work chair for Gillian Welch and David Rawlings of Woodland Studios, and the aluminum chair set, a collection of 4 hand-dyed Array chairs and refurbished through White the pandemic in 2020.
He is an ever-changing archive of White’s ongoing paintings in commercial design, adding his concepts for the Third Man Pressing factory and other facilities, adding the Third Man Recording Studio in Nashville, while his interior design paintings span Third Man Records’ retail outlets in Detroit and Nashville and its Bowling Alley Three Pin Alley.
In terms of graphic design, White designed all the homemade posters and flyers from 1997 to 2001 for The White Stripes and his own solo paintings, plus the Third Man logos and more. His paintings on tools and appliances include custom-designed guitars. , drum kits, Peppermint Triple Tremolo Unit and Diddley Bow, the one-string tool he built in the opening scene of the 2009 documentary It Might Get Loud directed through Davis Guggenheim.
An innovator in vinyl design, White’s contributions come with Under Label Groove, Triple Decker Record, Liquid Filled LP, Tri-Color Records and ULTRA LP.
