With the country’s political environment largely gone, it is rare to see governors win elections on contradictory ground, making the concept of a disappointed Republican in one of the country’s Democratic strongholds implausible. Republicans haven’t won a statewide race in California since 2006.
But there are exceptions: Republican governors have challenged opportunities in solidly Democratic territory: Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maryland. Their good luck is even more surprising that those states scored the highest percentage of wins for Joe Biden in last year’s presidential election.
This may provide a dose of encouragement for Republican applicants to remember, but the cases don’t have perfect compatibility with California, starting with the inevitable shadow of former President Donald Trump.
Vermont Gov. Phil Scott, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan have distanced themselves from Trump: Scott voted for Biden last year, Baker left his poll blank and Hogan voted for Ronald Reagan, the former president who died in 2004.
“These three governors are big critics of Donald Trump,” said Kyle Kondik, an analyst at the University of Virginia’s Center for Policy.
In California, the gop’s most sensible candidates have supported or have ties to Trump, who is largely unpopular in the outdoor state of his conservative base. Trump lost California to Biden by more than five million votes.
Newsom’s crusade is based on the slogan “stop the Republicans’ recall,” an attempt to provide for the election as a purely partisan effort, which is not the case. Newsom’s leading political strategist tweets a 2019 photo of Republican candidate Kevin Faulconer, former San Diego mayor, next to Trump in his Oval Office office.
In California, “I think it would be tricky to present himself as a national-type Republican” with Trump still wielding broad influence, Kondik added.
Marshall Cohen, political director of the Democratic Governors Association, said California’s race was completely different from the elections in Vermont, Massachusetts and Maryland.
These governors “were able to push Back Trump forcefully and create outdoor political profiles of the modern Republican Party,” Cohen said.
Trump’s conundrum, still popular with the Republican base, is most productively noticed through California Republican candidate Caitlyn Jenner, the former Olympian and television personality of truth.
Jenner supported Trump in 2016, but then confronted his administration on transgender issues. Still, among Jenner’s advisers were former members of Trump’s crusade. At his first press convention in July, he said he didn’t need Trump’s approval.
“I hope the GOP will come up to me and be more inclusive,” he said.
Other Republicans besides conservative radio host Larry Elder and businessman John Cox, who lost to Newsom in 2018, were also Trump supporters last year.
In an interview, Cox disputed that Trump is a force in the recall election, and said the impetus to oint Newsom stemmed from frustration with rising crime rates, water and energy shortages, and the return of coronavirus restrictions.
“I’m my own person, and this race isn’t about Trump,” Cox said, asserting that Newsom seeks to use the former president as a political corner “to make other people angry again. “
Elder, who is black, told the Newsom that “it’s all racism, that divides Americans. “
In Massachusetts, Baker, a social moderate who supports reproductive rights, has sought out the department of national politics and paintings in the political aisle, said his political adviser, Jim Conroy.
At a time of tough partisanship in Washington, “it’s this that makes it attractive to people,” Conroy said.
With many electorates disturbed by the pandemic and the quo in Sacramento, Conroy believes Republicans have a vacancy in California. If a candidate combines a conservative budget calendar with calls for bipartisan solutions, “anyone can win with that message,” he said.
Scott of Vermont also supports reproductive rights, while Hogan has made his mark by focusing on taxes and the economy, largely through entanglements on social issues.
Among the top Republican applicants in California, his top message is opposing progressive policies on the election, virus restrictions and just about everything.
Some, however, have also spoken out on cultural issues: Former state meeting member Kevin Kiley has mocked the critical theory of race, which focuses on the concept that racism is systemic in the nation’s establishments and which paints for white dominance in society.
There are other differences with California. Despite Democratic leanings, eastern states are accustomed to electing moderate Republican governors, while California is Democratic. Republican voter registration fell to 24% statewide.
There are also quirks in California’s impeachment elections that can set the bar for an unintended end.
Recent polls that the race is hardening. These polls also imply a frustrating trend for Democrats, whose electorate seems fed up with the election.
