Mickey Drexler, gap’s former chief executive, said the clothing giant shouldn’t have collaborated with Kanye West because “it’s not a legal entity. “
The 10-year partnership with Yeezy Gap announced in June and produced 3 feather jackets, most recently a red one, of which West wore an edition on the listening night leading up to the release of his upcoming album, Donda.
Drexler, who directed Gap between 1983 and 2002, said last week that despite West’s past paintings with Adidas, collaboration was a bad idea. “I probably shouldn’t say that, but I told [West] I shouldn’t make the deal because it doesn’t make sense,” Drexler told Yahoo Finance Live.
“I still have a lot of friends in Gap, but it doesn’t paint for someone like Kanye. It is not a legal user and Gap is a giant company . . . He’s a wise guy, but he hasn’t. And I don’t think they either.
Drexler revealed that the launch of the first blue feather jacket gave the company $7 million (£5 million) overnight, while Gap shares rose 42% after the partnership was announced. The black Yeezy Gap jacket is reselled at places like Stock X for around £500.
In June, Gap showed its goal of closing its 81 physical outlets in the UK and Ireland.
