CertainTeed’s terminal dock operating structure and other innovations will be incorporated into controlled environmental recovery through the Greenfield Environmental Multistate Trust (Greenfield), the environmental reaction manager who took over in 2011 for the site located at 1611 Talleyrand Avenue. The Corp site has not been used since 1978 and in the past was used to make fertilizers and formulate pesticides.
Construction is expected to begin in 2022 following approval of the final corrective design through the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. Greenfield and CertainTeed will coordinate the parts of the cleanup that are required for the installation of CertainTeed at an estimated total charge of $70 million. The rest will be implemented through Greenfield. Cleanup activities will be conducted under EPA supervision in consultation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
The new pier will help CertainTeed’s nearby wall panel plant in Palatka and strengthen the company’s chain of origin in the southeastern United States.
CertainTeed’s structure of the logistics facility and its innovations will be supported by $3. 4 million in asset tax incentives approved last night through the Jacksonville City Council.
“We are deeply grateful to the City of Jacksonville for its new logistics facility on the St. Johns, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Greenfield to responsibly manage this Superfund site,” said Jay Bachmann, vice president and general manager of Yeso CertainTeed’s Product Group. “This assignment will create a highly infected Superfund site for productive use, creating dozens of full-time jobs and strengthening our company’s ability to serve our customers. “
Once operational, CertainTeed’s pier in Jacksonville will feature a bulkhead, a conveyor, an unloading ramp, truck parking spaces, and a small office. Approximately 32 new full-time jobs will be created by the end of 2024.
CertainTeed’s planned reuse of the Superfund in Jacksonville follows several other primary investments this year in environmental sustainability. In March, the company signed a 12-year power acquisition agreement for 120 megawatts of renewable power from a wind farm in McLean County, Illinois. , the company introduced Sustaining Futures, Raising Communities, a program that will bring a more sustainable structure to North American neighborhoods.
