The Plett Arts Festival takes to the streets, anything that hasn’t been done on the city’s popular Garden Route in years.
This resolution is in line with its motto “expect the unexpected” by organizing 10 days of outdoor music, film, poetry and land art.
Land art returns to the after an eight-year sabbatical and this time the theme is “lift – the spirit of elevation”.
Artists from the city were invited to create an expression with an inspiring and uplifting message.
Festival director Cindy Wilson-Trollip said: “The art of the earth has been part of Plett’s landscape for several years with permanent works such as Aartmoeders in Kranshoek and Calling the Herd at Crossroads.
“And there are plans to get on this exhibition and art itinerary in the short or long term in an intriguing way. “
Wilson-Trollip said previous land art installations in Plettenberg Bay have fascinated and that the gift of two permanent land art works is fostered through the local elephant population.
She said Simon Max Bannister’s “Aartmoeders,” a series of life-size rocks arranged to look like elephants moving along coastal cliffs.
“The moment room, Calling the Herd, is in Crossroads on the R340. “
He said this piece was created through Strijdom van der Merwe and that visitors can play the horn to ‘summon’ the herd.
Patty Butterworth, CEO of Plett Tourism, there will be six sites for ephemeral artwork on land: Piesang River Mouth, Central Beach, Hobie Beach, Wedge Beach, Lookout Peninsula and Lookout Beach.
Butterworth said art can be seen as creation or in the end.
“In an effort to help independent artists and cultural organizations, we are working with the city’s arts network,” he said.
Butterworth said that in addition to a number of pop-up pieces, beach calligrapher Andrew van der Merwe will give two workshops, titled Mindful Marks and Beach Calligraphy, for aspiring beach and land artists on Oct. 8 and 9.
“For the peace of the brain and the respect of our artists and ours, all existing Covid-19 protection protocols will be monitored and respected,” he added.
