On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration paved the way for young people ages five to 11 to receive Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.
The FDA has legal doses for children (one-third the amount given to teens and adults) for emergency use, and up to 28 million more young Americans may be eligible for vaccines next week.
Another regulatory hurdle remains: On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease and Prevention Advisors will make more detailed recommendations on which other young people should vaccinate, and a final resolution from the agency’s director is expected some time later.
“The explanation for why being here is so your kids can get back to a general life,” said Dr. Peter Marks, the FDA’s vaccine leader. “The massive burden of this pandemic has not only been on physical illness, it is also on the mental and social progression of young people. “
Some countries have started other COVID-19 vaccines in children under the age of 12, adding China, which has just begun vaccines for 3-year-olds, but many of those who the vaccine made through Pfizer and its wife BioNTech are watching the U. S. decision, and European regulators have barely begun contemplating the companies’ youth doses.
