A new e-book alleges that former President Donald Trump stopped receiving intelligence in the final weeks of his presidency after his supporters stormed the U. S. Capitol on Jan. 6 in an attempt to reverse the effects of the 2020 presidential election.
The most recent edition of John Helgerson’s Getting to Know The President, which was first published in 1996 and examines intelligence reports given to presidents, examines Trump with his intelligence reports and his reports.
“For the intelligence community, Trump’s transition has gone through the greatest deception of his old delight of informing new presidents,” Helgerson, a retired CIA official, wrote in his book.
Helgerson said the only comparison between Trump and Richard Nixon and even that is an imperfect analogy, since Nixon necessarily refused to paint with the intelligence network paintings and instead chose to obtain reports from national security adviser Henry Kissinger.
“Trump like Nixon, suspicious and insecure about the intelligence process, but unlike Nixon in the way he reacted,” he wrote. “Instead of shutting down the CI, Trump committed to him, but publicly attacked him. “
Helgerson cites an interview with Beth Sanner, which was Helgerson’s shortest. Trump midway through his term and replaced Ted Gistaro.
“At the time, the PA program had been set at two consultations consistent with the week, with each consultation averaging forty-five minutes,” he wrote. “Gistaro had followed the practice of offering the Chair with a one-page review of the topics. he covered the query as well as a set of graphs. Sanner continued this practice and found that the twice-weekly program featured time to write a report with graphics anchoring what Sanner called “storytelling” on the topics.
Sanner noted that while Trump had not read the presidential report, he had read or noticed other things he would mention such as their conversation.
In addition, Trump won “deep dives” and inter-agency briefings. He also liked to listen to “guest analysts. ” Similarly, the arrival of National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien increased White House staff interest in the daily presidential briefing and O’Brien and White House staff leader Mark Meadows asked Sanner to cover the topics his informants shared with them.
Trump also reported that he continued to get his reports despite his public denunciation of the intelligence community, he continued to get reports as usual, even in the event that a CI officer filed a whistleblowing complaint against Mr. Trump. Trump will pressure Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, prompting his first impeachment trial in 2019.
Briefings would continue after the 2020 presidential election, as Trump mistakenly claimed he had been robbed.
“When Sanner informed the president before traveling to Mar-a-Lago for the holidays, he said he would see her later,” Mr. Helgerson wrote. Briefings were scheduled to resume on January 6, but none were planned after the attack on the Capitol. “
By contrast, Vice President Mike Pence reportedly held a briefing six days a week.
“After Pence was informed, he joined the president for his briefing and discussion,” the e-book reads. “This has ensured that the percentage of the same data and, perhaps most importantly, are aware of and have contributed to whatever direction they have provided to senior subordinates for policy formulas and operational purposes. “
