Music director Jung Jae-il has been selected as the winner of the first Chanel Next Prize.
Launched through the French luxury brand, the Chanel Next Prize pays tribute to 10 foreign artists “to provide an emerging generation of artistic threats with the resources to undertake ambitious new projects. “
Jung has gained international popularity for his paintings in the hit Korean Netflix series “Squid Game” and “Okja” and “Parasite” from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho.
Chanel said Jung, who divides his time between Seoul and Berlin, “is a composer, performer, music director and manufacturer [who creates] a new genre that fuses Korean music with the sounds of Western instruments. “
Last month, Jung was the first Korean to win a gong at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards.
Each winner of the Chanel Next Prize receives €100,000 and the opportunity to participate in mentoring and networking systems supported throughout the company.
