A hip-hop festival at Yonkers is scheduled for Saturday in honor of rap legend DMX’s birthday and to celebrate renovations to a Yonkers municipal housing complex where he lived.
Contest organizers expect another 1,000 people to attend the event, which will come with live performances, loose food and prizes for the winners.
“He put the city on his back,” DJ Superior said of his friend DMX, with whom he worked on music at Superior’s apartment in Mulford Gardens. “We did a lot of songs from this apartment. “
He was in the hospital with DMX before he died in April, which caused his friend’s words to rhyme in his ear, he said.
He called the DMX “bigger than life” and credited it with letting others know that he came from Yonkers as a superstar.

The occasion will celebrate what the New York State Senate has declared dmx day, but will also honor the mayor and police commissioner of Yonkers, who Superior said played a role in ensuring the protection of all DMX celebrations after his death in April.
The occasion is also a type of homecoming, said Wilson Kimball, president and CEO of the city’s Municipal Housing Authority, as Calcagno Homes citizens are expected to return in early January after the complex underwent $43 million in renovations.

The use of a mask will be mandatory in the gym where the performances are held, the organizers will distribute them during the event. For those who prefer to look outside, a tent will be set up on Brook Street where performances will be broadcast live. The Brook Street domain between New Main and Morgan Streets will be closed to traffic for the event.
