DOYLESTOWN, PA – The U. S. Environmental Protection AgencyThe U. S. Food and Drug Administration will hold a town hall meeting on Wednesday, May 31 to gather public input on its plans to erase the Chem-Fab Superfund on North Broad Street.
From the mid-1960s to the late 1970s, Chem Fab, Inc. operated a steel etching and electroplating facility at 300-360 North Broad, which stored and disposed of processing chemicals on site.
As a result, the EPA said the groundwater underlying the site was infected with metals, volatile biological compounds, and perfluorinated and polyfluorinated (PFAS) ingredients. Compounds have also been detected in the past in two municipal wells and several residential wells.
The site proposed for the National Priorities List (NPL) in September 2007 and added to the list in March 2008.
According to the EPA, the proposed cleanup plan will address infected soil gases, untreated infected soil in the past, and infected sediment and surface water at the site.
EPA’s choice includes a mix of vapor mitigation, monitoring and institutional controls at a cost of $293,000; soil removal and offsite disposal at a cost of $7. 1 million; and removal, stabilization and removal of off-site sediment at a cost of $567,000.

Earlier this month, the EPA announced the final touch of a groundwater remedy formula to speed up cleanup. The formula was funded through a $2. 9 million expenditure under the bipartisan Infrastructure Act (BIL).
“This historic buildup in BIL investment is driving a $3. 5 billion investment in Superfund cleanups across the country, which is having a dramatic effect on EPA’s ability to address legacy contaminants that threaten the health of communities across the country,” Adam said. Ortiz, EPA’s regional administrator for the mid-Atlantic. “By expediting those cleanups, we’re making sure we’re covering affected communities and bringing those sites closer together in combination with directing potential redevelopment. “
