A former HISTORIC cinema can be transformed into 20 apartments on the ground floor.
Developer Halo Developments wants to partially demolish and refurbish the interior of the old Regal Cinema at 2 Market Place, Ringwood.
The firm said by constructing a rear and roof extension to the building they could create two commercial units and 20 maisonettes, with 11 car parking spaces and 54 cycle spaces.
Making plans to New Forest District Council, agent Pegasus Group said the progression would come with 11 two-bedroom apartments, 8 one-bedroom apartments and one three-bedroom apartment.
The site has been empty since 2002, when it was last used as a nightclub with a car h in the back.
The statement continued: “The intent is to complete a transformational development that will encourage economic, social and cultural improvements within the local vicinity.”
When it was built in 1868, the “New Town Hall” at 2 Place du Marché was originally used as a grain exchange house and courthouse.
The building was converted into a cinema in 1914 and then a department store parade with a squash club and Italian restaurant in 1977.
In 1990, the building became the Route 42 nightclub before permission was granted for additional remodeling, adding residential apartments and restaurants, in 2004 and 2008.
A spokesperson for the Pegasus Group said: “Our project has been to take an existing historic theatre in a position on the main street of this historic market town, and repair the building to turn it into a viable residential progression with a lively advertising floor.
“We have restored the existing facades of the original building to be as in-keeping as possible.”
