SALMON, Idaho (KIFI) – Drivers on U. S. Highway 93 north of Salmon deserve to expect 20-minute delays in April as crews climb the rocky slopes above the road.
Professional climbers will clear loose rocks to lessen the threat of debris falling onto the road during spring freeze-thaw cycles, animal migration, and rainfall, which can occur year-round.
Work will begin Tuesday between Fourth of July Creek and Wagon Hammer Springs. For the next two weeks, groups are expected to be on-site every weekday between 7 a. m. and 7 a. m. m. and five p. m. They will close the road for 20 minutes at a time to cut stones, stop work and clear the street, then reopen it to allow waiting vehicles to pass.
There will be no delays outside of operating hours, unless a protective factor requires immediate attention.
As a component of this project, crews will also fix the existing rock netting and install more to cover a larger area. Crews will return in the fall to complete the installation of a new rock barrier at this site.
