The New York court charged with overseeing the criminal trial of Donald J. Trump later this month on Monday extended the gag order to prohibit the former president from attacking members of the judge’s family, who in recent days have been targeted by Trump. Abuse. Trump.
U. S. District Judge Juan M. Merchan issued an order last week prohibiting Trump from attacking witnesses, prosecutors, jurors and court staff, as well as their family members. That order, however, covered either Judge Merchan himself or Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg. who had filed criminal charges against the former president.
And while Monday’s ruling still doesn’t apply to the judge or prosecutor, Judge Merchan, acceding to a request from Mr. Bragg, replaced the gag order so that it now covers their families.
In his decision, the judge cited recent attacks on his daughter and rejected M. ‘s argument. Trump said his remarks constituted “essential political speech. “
“This tendency to attack the family members of the jurists and lawyers who preside over their instances serves no valid purpose,” Judge Merchan wrote. “This only instills concern in those assigned or called to participate in the process, since not only they, but also members of their family circle, are ‘righteous targets’ for the vitriol of the accused. “
Bragg’s office had asked the judge to explain that those who enjoyed it were included, calling such coverage “amply justified. “Noting Trump’s history of “threatening and alarming comments,” Trump’s office said. Bragg warned of “the damage those family members have suffered. “
