Donald J. Trump, desperate to delay his criminal trial in Manhattan this month, has renewed his call for the judge’s resignation in the case, the latest twist in the former president’s attacks on the integrity of the case. Judgment on. . . and his family.
In a court filing released Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers argued for a moment that the judge, Juan M. Merchan has a clash of interests because his daughter is a political representative who has worked with Democratic candidates. The lawyers also claimed that his company, Authentic Campaigns, used social media to ridicule Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and promote his ties to President Biden.
“The lawsuit in this case will gain financial advantages from Authentic by offering its customers more resources for fundraising, Authentic will make more money by helping with those communications, and the Girl of Honor will continue to make money from those advancements through her leadership role. within Authentic,” Trump, Todd Blanche and Susan Necheles, wrote in a letter to the judge. “Your honour has an interest in this matter that warrants a recusal. “
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, which filed a complaint against Trump, responded by pointing out that Judge Merchan had refused in the past to recuse himself, raising a state advisory committee on judicial ethics. They argued that Trump had failed to present any new evidence, aside from “a chain of innuendo,” and said he had made “multiple mitigated factual leaps that undermined any direct connection between Authentic and this case. “
Trump’s most recent attempt to overturn the sentence, which, if granted, would delay the trial indefinitely, coincided with a series of attacks on Loren Merchan’s daughter. Last week, Trump took aim at Merchan, falsely claiming that he had posted a photo of him on social media bars.
He then escalated his attacks, identifying Ms. Merchan through a call, and accusing her of being “one who rabidly hates Trump. “She also posted a news article on her social media site, Truth Social, that featured two photographs of Ms. Merchan.
