Toronto Raptors midfielder Jontay Porter has placed millions of dollars in sports through a VIP account with Colorado-registered sportsbook Fanduel, reports Action Network’s Chase Howell.
The NBA showed on March 25 that it was investigating two cases of in-game irregularities similar to Porter’s. In the Jan. 26 and March 20 games, Porter played sparingly before exiting with an injury. In January’s game, he played just over 4 minutes. before leaving the area due to what the team said had been made worse by an eye injury sustained 4 days earlier. In the March game, he played less than 3 minutes before having health issues again. In both cases, there has been increased interest in reduced bets. about evidentiary bets involving Porter, ESPN reported.
Porter placed more than 1,000 bets with Fanduel between 2021 and 23 while playing in the NBA G-League, Action Network reported. His bets were in the “millions of dollars” and had been halted a few weeks before signing with the Raptors in December of last year. There is no evidence that he has bet on NBA games, according to the report. NBA policy prohibits players and workers from participating in NBA, WNBA and G-League games, but in other sports it is not explicitly prohibited.
Porter is the younger brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. He played one season at the University of Missouri before a knee injury sidelined him for his sophomore year. He then went undecided in the 2019 NBA Draft and signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. Porter played 11 games with the Bucks in 2021, then played for Milwaukee, Detroit Pistons and G-League affiliates Raptors before returning to the NBA with Toronto this season.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said last week that Porter was charged with a “cardinal sin” and could be expelled from the league if the league’s investigation proves the allegations against him.
“I don’t think there’s anything more serious in this league when it comes to games and in our games and that refers to direct player involvement,” Silver said. “So the investigation is ongoing, but the consequences can be very serious. “
