The Post and Courier, the oldest newspaper in the South, has its roots in The Courier, founded in 1803, and The Evening Post, founded in 1894. In 1926, the two newspapers merged when The Courier, then The News and Courier, was purchased through The Evening Post Industries Company. The two newspapers maintained separate newsgroups until the 1980s, when those groups were consolidated. In 1991, when it became apparent that reading behavior was more productive, it was served through a single edition of the Paper, a morning edition, the two newspapers merging into The Post and Courier. The newspaper is now published through The Post and Courier, Inc.

Effective October 1, 2021, Evening Post Industries was restructured and split into three corporations as part of a plan to realign family business stakes. The Post and Courier and the other newspapers formerly owned by Evening Post Industries now operate under Evening Post Publishing Inc.  The organization also has an e-book publisher and White Oak Forestry, which owns and manages forest land, primarily in the Georgetown area.
