The head of Ukraine’s national power company has called on the European Union to help fuel storage sites from Russian attacks.

Europe has been stockpiling herbal fuel in Ukraine after its own capacity was filled amid depressed demand. Russia, for its part, has targeted its attacks on electrical infrastructure and fuel depots.

“Ukraine is playing a key role in sourcing fuel for Central and Eastern Europe this winter,” Natasha Fielding, director of European fuel pricing at Argus Media, told the Financial Times in January.
European demand has been subdued in recent months due to slowing economic activity, but Europe still needs a lot of natural fuel for space heating and power generation, hence the demand for garages in Ukraine.
“Technologically, we are all in good shape, we have checked the repair of the apparatus [of the damaged surface] and we are fulfilling our obligations [to our customers],” Naftogaz’s Chernychov told the Financial Times. Apparently, this is not enough for the garage sites to remain functional, which is why Chernyshov advocated for more air defense systems.

In addition to fuel storage, Ukraine remains a main channel for the Russian pipeline to Europe, as Chernyshov noted.
“The explanation for why Naftogaz kept this transit agreement [even amid the war with Russia] is to satisfy the EU’s fuel desires and remain a reliable partner [of the bloc],” he said.
