Former President Donald Trump’s return to the campaign trail after the start of his Manhattan “hush money” trial was canceled Saturday night after inclement weather threatened Wilmington, North Carolina.
Trump was on his way to a fundraiser in Charlotte when he called the rally, which was held outdoors at the Wilmington airport, to tell his supporters to take cover immediately.
“We’re going to get there in a few minutes, but they’d rather we didn’t go in because there’s some danger in it,” Trump said in a phone call broadcast over the rally’s loudspeakers. “And first and foremost, we have to make sure everyone is safe, that’s why they asked us to ask other people to leave the site and seek shelter. “
Trump said the crusade would temporarily reschedule the rally and promised it would be “bigger and better. “
The rally will be his first primary campaign campaign since Trump ordered a New York court appearance during his trial. Jury numbers concluded Friday and opening arguments in the trial are expected to begin Monday.
Trump had lamented in the past that the lawsuit prevented him from participating in this week’s election crusade.
