This article is part of Media Bubbles, a regular article that examines how other news and opinion outlets (large, small, and component) are covering the 2024 presidential election.
The partisan media’s reaction to former President Donald J. Trump’s historic conviction was swift.
Conservative websites and commentators called the verdict a sham, intensifying attacks on the prosecution and the judge who presented the seven-week criminal trial in Manhattan. Several websites have falsely described the trial as “rigged” and “corrupt. “
However, the liberal media may not agree on what to make of the verdict, but they largely welcomed it. While some mocked Trump for the possible loss of his right to vote in the November election, several media outlets also called the verdict “unsatisfactory” and potentially “irrelevant. “
Here’s how several media outlets gave the same verdict:
The Daily Wire, a conservative website, hesitated to disapprove of the verdict. “Trump condemned. Pray for the Republic,” headlined Ben Shapiro, the site’s founder and editor emeritus.
Shapiro, who live-streamed his podcast after the verdict, said it was “a terrible day for the country” and that “it’s the weakest of charges” against the former president. Shapiro then falsely claimed that Trump had been “convicted of crimes. “that don’t exist. ” Trump was found guilty of falsifying business records similar to so-called secret invoices to porn actress Stormy Daniels.
