Four sites have been shortlisted for SMR installation
The British subsidiary of the US nuclear company Holtec has chosen four sites for the construction of a £1. 3 billion plant to manufacture small modular reactors.
In 2022, Holtec partnered with Balfour Beatty on projects to build next-generation mini-nuclear power plants in the UK and announced last December that it had secured a £30 million grant from the UK to scale up its SMR-300 reactor.
The company has now announced that the Cumbria, South Yorkshire, West Midlands and Tees Valley facilities have been shortlisted from 14 applicants for a production facility.
Two to four reactors a year are planned to be built at a plant located at the winning site, which will be announced in the autumn.
The reactors will be in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.
The site’s aim will be to deliver two to four reactors a year, worth between £1 billion and £2 billion.

Ben Houchen, Mayor of Tees Valley, said: “I am confident that we can convince Holtec that we are the prime location, given our extensive engineering knowledge, the perfect shipping links between Tees and the huge prospects of our free port. “
The current UK government’s ambition is for up to a quarter of all electricity in the UK to come from nuclear power by 2050, and small modular reactors are a component of this vision.
The Conservatives also reveal 30 more cities in the race to spice up their money as the primary parties continue their election campaigns.
