VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail samples and trends in each country, which are then extrapolated to make up the broader region. This allows us to produce figures that are within 10% of the actual totals.

This knowledge is compared to the official shipping figures published through console brands and with the figures estimated through regional trackers with a higher market policy than ours. We then updated our own estimates to align with those figures. This can lead to regular changes, sometimes in a short period of time, but we believe it is important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Please note that our estimates are based on sales knowledge (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases, the figures published through console brands are based on shipping (sale) knowledge, where as soon as a device leaves the factory and enters the origin chain for delivery, it is considered a sale. That’s why there is a difference between corporate numbers (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after adjustments. The only exception to this is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining inventory eventually runs out, at which point the numbers will match.
