The Swansea distillery in Penderyn, built on the historic site of Hafod Morfa Copperworks, has “temporarily suspended production” due to economic conditions.
Director-General Stephen Davies said the production halt is due to several factors, including rising alcohol taxes in the United Kingdom, the cost-of-living crisis and the “general economic downturn”.
Swansea has an annual capacity of 400,000 litres of natural alcohol per year.
Penderyn’s remaining distilleries (at Brecon Beacons and Llandudno) have annual capacities of 400,000 litres and 100,000 litres respectively.
Davies said the company still produces “globally” 500,000 liters of natural alcohol a year.

The Swansea distillery was funded through a £3. 8 million ($4. 90 million) lottery grant and opened last year. The site also houses a guest center.
In 2022, Davies told Just Drinks that the Swansea site would “focus on the production of whisky, a blend of single malts and mixed malts, and would also give us the opportunity to create other styles”.
It is still open to visitors and its corporate events and masterclasses are running as normal.
Penderyn ships to more than 40 countries, with France being its largest foreign market. China, along with Germany and the United States, make up Davies Penderyn’s “four key export markets. “
Welsh Whiskey Co. recorded a cash inflow of £23. 1 million ($30 million) for the year ended August 31, 2023, up from £19. 6 million last year. The distiller reported a profit of £1. 2 million in its 2023 monetary year, the same as the previous year.
