Swift Current Energy has secured a tax equity investment from technology company Google for its 800-megawatt (593 MWac) Double Black Diamond fixed-term (MWdc) solar assignment in southern Illinois, United States.
The measure positions the task as the initiative of the sun east of the Mississippi River.
Google’s investment leverages the Inflation Reduction Act, adding communities of power and domestic content incentives.
Amanda Peterson Corio, Global Head of Google Data Center Energy, said: “As we work to responsibly expand our infrastructure, we will need to partner with corporations like Swift Current, who understand the nuances of the energy markets in which we operate and can help unlock them. A rate that corresponds to the speed and scale of expansion demanded by electric power grids today.
The project, 30 miles west of Springfield, Illinois, is currently under construction and is expected to begin operations in early 2025.
Swift Current Energy, the developer of the assignment, will act as long-term owner and operator.
Financing for the structure had already been secured by Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Société Générale, Truist and ING.
At its peak, the allocation will be 500 workers.
Swift Current has selected McCarthy Building Companies as its engineering, procurement and structural (EPC) partner.
The order includes modules from First Solar, basically manufactured in the United States, and solar trackers from the American corporation Nextracker.
Double Black Diamond Solar will bring meaning to communities in Sangamon and Morgan counties.
It is expected to build 100,000 homes per year and carbon emissions will reach around one million tonnes per year.
Constellation NewEnergy has agreed to acquire a portion of the energy and renewable energy certificate generated through the project.

In November 2023, Swift Current Energy reported that its 197 MW Castle Gap wind farm in Texas had begun operations.
