Cailee Spaeny is on a meteoric career trajectory lately, landing the lead role of Civil War co-star Priscilla, about to head into season 2 of the Emmy-winning Beef, most recently the star of the reviewed series. Highly effective Extraterrestrial Array: Romulus.
But now some viewers are wondering why she didn’t get the role of Ellie Williams in season 2 of The Last of Us. Or at least, it’s fun to wonder what could have happened.
If you’ve seen Alien: Romulus and played The Last of Us Part 2, you’ll immediately understand. The resemblance between Spaeny, especially in this film, and the older and brave Ellie is uncanny.
What makes this even greater is the fact that Spaeny’s interim spouse for much of this film is Isabela Merced, literally the actress betting on Ellie’s love interest, Dina, in the upcoming season of The Last of Us. So it’s not just about Spaeny as Ellie, it’s also scenes with Dina in the literal sense.
Of course, Spaeny has nothing to do with The Last of Us season 2 when this adaptation of Part 2 begins. That role continues to be played through Bella Ramsey, who was nominated for an Emmy for Season 1. Many wondered how they could take on this role before the season aired, and they didn’t look much like Ellie from the games, but they did. A wonderful job.
The moment component is another story. It’s a five-year jump from the games and Ellie is expected to age noticeably physically and become more toughened and intense. So now other people are again wondering if they deserve to have stayed in the role, and I’ve noticed some saying that Spaeny deserves it. having replaced them for Season 2/Part 2, given how much she resembles Ellie from that game. However, she probably would have been too old to play young Ellie before that (Spaeny is 26).
Isabela Merced came out to congratulate Ramsey’s performance in season 2:
Ramsey has made a name for himself on set and they’ve had their hair replaced, they still look young, in fact they’re a little older than Ellie in Part 2, he’s now 20 years old. Given their functionality in Season 1, I’m sure they will. wonderful here. And it’s not like her co-star, Kaitlyn Dever, is a big, muscular woman like Abby was in the game. At least we don’t think he gained 40 pounds of muscle for this role.
