Since rioters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, the Democratic Party has sought to reclaim the role of democracy, painting Donald J. Trump and his allies as extremists willing to deny the will of voters to reach the can.

Now, after President Biden abandoned his re-election bid and Democrats temporarily whitewashed Vice President Kamala Harris to upgrade her, Republicans are looking to turn the argument on its head.

In a series of statements and social media posts, Republicans have argued that Democrats, by pressuring Biden to resign, have “disenfranchised” the other 14 million people who voted for him in the party’s primary.

The accusation does not refer to any party rules or an alleged violation of the law. Rather, it’s the latest attempt by Republicans to muddy the waters over a factor that helped Democrats win key elections two years ago. Since Trump’s attempt to oppose his 2020 election following the defeat, which sparked the Jan. 6 riot and criminal charges against the former president, Democrats have portrayed Republicans as a risk to democratic norms.

They used images of the January 6 insurrection in attack classified ads and mobilized the Democratic electorate opposed to the Republican-backed law restricting voting. The factor was especially vital for Democratic governors and secretaries of state in critical states, who won each and every statewide gubernatorial election in Nevada and Georgia in 2022.

On Monday, Trump tried a new tactic to neutralize that threat, focusing on claiming a “stolen” nomination. “Biden’s race was stolen after he won it in the primaries, for the first time!Trump posted on his social media site. ” These other people are the real THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!” »
