Aug. 20: The Joplin Sports Authority, in partnership with Joplin High School, submitted a bid to host the MSHSAA Men’s Volleyball Championship.
If they win one of the four-year bids, the occasion would be held at JHS’s Kaminsky Gymnasium.
“We need to be a smart spouse of the JSA in this bet. We have the capacity to host an occasion like this with the capacity of our gym and our facilities will be ideal to accommodate the teams,” said Matt, Joplin’s sporting director. Hiatt said.
Applications for the event opened last Wednesday and Shaun Buck, an employee of the Joplin Sports Authority, pointed out that they can only vary from 0 to 4 years old.
“We are thrilled and would love to host in Joplin,” Hiatt added.
Last year, the first Missouri Men’s Volleyball State Championship was held at the prep point at the Simon Athletic Center on the campus of Maryville University in St. John’s. Louis.
There were 75 competing in the inaugural men’s volleyball season in spring 2024, divided into 8 districts and all in the same class.
As the game grows, groups will be divided into categories to compete based on school size and other games.
There are still no schools in Joplin’s domain to start a men’s volleyball program. Hiatt said Joplin is open to the option of adding one.
“We have talked about it and are looking at the option of adding a men’s volleyball program. If that time comes, we will launch the program,” he said. “We’re looking to serve our entire student body with new things. Whether it’s a sport, a club or another extracurricular activity, we need everyone in Joplin to feel like they have what they want at their disposal. “
A prospective factor would be the scheduling of games at this time. The closest with a volleyball team from last year is Nixa High School.
Hiatt is confident the situation will improve as interest in the game grows and more schools find a way to integrate it into their track and field branch and get staff to add another team.
Another challenge will be ensuring that enough academics are able to join. Men’s volleyball most recently competes in the spring and is said to encompass baseball, track and field, men’s golf, and men’s tennis.
