New geological dating places the first European hominids in the south of the Iberian Peninsula 1. 3 million years ago

One of the most important controversies about human evolution and expansion is when and from what direction the first hominids from the African continent arrived in Europe. However, the geological dating techniques of the Orce sites (Baza basin, Granada, Spain) place the human remains found in this domain as the oldest in Europe, approximately 1. 3 million years old. This gives rise to speculation that humans arrived in Europe from the south of the Iberian Peninsula, through the Strait of Gibraltar, rather than returning to the Mediterranean via Asia.
