Whether employing sites like Poshmark or directory pieces on Facebook Marketplace or the OfferUp app, determined marketers can earn extra money or a full-time source of income by reselling clothing. But to be successful as a reseller, it is vital to choose the right sales platforms, market your business correctly, and choose the right products.

If you decide to sell the wrong brands, you can also run out of stock or even lose money on each sale. Two East Coast stores have shared several brands that would likely be perfectly appropriate in your wardrobe, but are worth reselling.

Shopping mall staple Forever 21 may be a hit with teens and tweens for wardrobe essentials like tank tops and tees. But these products might not be the best for resale.
“Fast fashion does not do well. It’s inexpensive to begin with and never holds up or holds its value,” said Jennifer Johnson, owner of the lifestyle resale store True Fashionistas in Naples, Florida.

Japanese clothing company Uniqlo offers a more upscale environment than most fast fashion clothing stores, with clothing perceived as higher quality. The company is also collaborating with designers to further enhance its brand.
“Uuniqlo is included in the fast fashion category, but, in my opinion, it’s actually different,” Myles Ethan Lascity, director of fashion media at Southern Methodist University, told Highsnobiety.
Despite those efforts to stand out, Uniqlo holds its price well in the reseller market, according to Johnson.
The epitome of fast fashion, any brands sold at mass market retailers like Target or Walmart are unlikely to hold value. This includes Time and Tru, George, and No Boundaries from Walmart and Cat & Jack, Art Class, Universal Thread, Wild Fable and others from Target.
“By the time we take the time to process them, we’re already losing money because they can be purchased for so little,” Johnson said.
The online women’s clothing store PrettyLittleThing can be compared to the online equivalent of Forever 21, with garments that may not last long.
“PrettyLittleThing has trendy styles, but the fabrication is mostly polyester,” said Eddie Reyes, founder of Jersey City, New Jersey-based conSHINEment. “Polyester is plastic. It won’t breathe, so it doesn’t feel good to wear.”
Johnson and Reyes agreed that it’s not just fast fashion clothing that you avoid as a retailer. Some big brands don’t maintain their price for a variety of reasons. It’s about knowing the market and what your audience wants. An example is theory.
“Theory is a luxury logo that sells for several hundred dollars in their retail stores. But they don’t resell much due to the number of pieces of this logo flooding thrift and consignment stores. The maximum original value of a woman may exceed $200, but the resale cost drops significantly,” Reyes said. “Some [can cost] as little as less than $10. “
Likewise, if you were hoping to make a little extra money selling those comfortable, beloved True Religion jeans you have in your closet, don’t bother, according to Johnson.
“Before, true faith was massive and now no one needs this brand, so we don’t even settle for it anymore,” he said.
Juicy Couture fell out of favor, according to Johnson.
In spite of releasing its first menswear line in 2024 and attempting to bring back the popularity of its iconic tracksuit, once a favorite of celebrities, the brand struggles to hold its value on the resale market.
“Juicy Couture resurfaced a while ago and now their logo doesn’t have much value,” Johnson said.
The casual luxury logo can now be found in stores like Kohl’s, which can reduce the perceived price of their high-end products. ” There are so many logos that sell an item cheaper, and we find that that ‘dilutes’ their same old logo,” Johnson said.
