Tiktok on the return Sunday, hours after President-elect Donald Trump promised to prevent it from “getting dark. “
The Chinese social media app showed it was in the process of restoring service in a post on X and praised Trump for his role in restoring the site.
“We thank President Trump for providing clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will not face any penalties in offering Tiktok to over 170 million Americans and enabling over 7 million small businesses to thrive,” wrote Tiktok Policy on X.
“It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States,” the statement said.
In a “Welcome again!” In the message that appears in the application after the ban, users were also informed: “Thank you for their patience and support. As a result of the efforts of President Trump, Tiktok is back in the United States!”
Delighted Tiktok users led other social sites to the percentage they had recovered to their accounts.
Among them were New Yorkers who rejoiced at the good news, though they expressed surprise that the ban was lifted so quickly.
‘That’s how fast!'” said one Internet user walking through Central Park.
Emma, 19, a student who stopped in South Carolina, said: “I was very excited when I saw that I had disappeared for a short time.
“I kept trying to click on the app because I missed it so much,” she said, laughing. “I hope it doesn’t go away again.”
The news came hours after Trump said he would issue an executive order on Monday to “prevent Tiktok from shutting down. ” In announcing his plans to save the app, Trump, 78, said the U. S. would acquire 50% ownership of a joint venture to buy the platform.
It was not clear whether Trump meant that he wanted the US government to partially own the app.
Tiktok’s parent company, Bytedance, had already faced nine months, or until Jan. 19, to sell the platform’s U. S. business or be banned in the country.
The ban had been overwhelmingly passed by both chambers of Congress in April and subsequently signed into law by President Biden.
But Trump, who first supported the ban in 2020, said Sunday that he hoped to grant the application of 90 days to locate a non -Chinese owner, which led the corporate to be online again without worrying about retaliation.
TikTok, which claims to have a user base of over 170 million in the US alone, has long triggered national security concerns, including over giving China access to a slew of American data.
Despite the change of Trump center on the application, some Republicans and technology magnates have been strongly opposed to restore it as it is, which raises continuous dangers for the national security of the United States.
“Unless and until Tiktok is no longer controlled through Beijing, the national security risk that motivated the divestment law has been addressed,” Evan Swarztrauber, a senior fellow at the Foundation for American Innovation, said Sunday.
Other technology experts criticized the application for creating an “artificial panic sensation” by closing their US operations before the end of the day, to temporarily repair them.
“Tiktok’s early shutdown amounted to incompetence or a planned PR stunt to inspire a manufactured sense of panic,” said Joel Thayer, a D. C. -based generation attorney and president of the Institute for Digital Progress. “Since it’s in relief, I guess it’s the latter.
“The fact is that even before Congress promoted the law, the United States told Tiktok how to solve its flagrant national security disorders for more than five years, and the corporate did nothing,” said Thayer. “Today, after trying to provide false claims under the first amendment to sustain the application of the law and on the eve of its prohibition, it needs a pity. It is frankly a hostile corridor and in trap.
US Senator Tom Cotton also expressed fear after the app would return for millions of Americans.
“Any corporate that hosts, distriyetes, facilities or in a different way facilitates the Tiktok controlled through the Communists may just face loads of billions of dollars of ruinous duty under the law, not only of the doj, yet also under the law on law securities, prosecution for shareholders and states AGS. Think about it, ”wrote Cotton on X.
While TikTok was back up and running for millions of Americans, the app remained unavailable for new consumers to download from the App Store.
Previous news about the app shutting down for smart reasons has some US users nervous about seeking it through a VPN, or virtual personal network, which can trick Internet sites and apps into believing that a user is founded in some other country.
VPNs were unable to help Americans access their accounts late Saturday and into Sunday while the short-lived ban was still in effect.
